The X Factor: Is XDefiant the Game-Changer for FPS?

XDefiant

The XDefiant beta has wrapped up what has been a successful showing, of the potential of the title. Ubisoft’s new first-person shooter is an arena shooter with factions that have different abilities, fast-paced gunplay, and boasts of having no Skill Based Match Making (SBMM) in normal play modes.

Ubisoft San Francisco headed by former Call Of Duty developer Mark Rubin (Infinity Ward) leads the development of this game and is taking XDefiant back to Call Of Duty’s traditional roots with its gunplay.

Naturally, the game has drawn unfair comparisons to the Call Of Duty franchise with its reception being split pretty evenly down the middle. Many, including myself, feel like the game can be successful on its own merit. While others feel it will fall into the shadow and dark abyss that many games would when compared to Call of Duty.

I was lucky enough to play in the past beta and the previous alpha test. Between the short time of both tests, my experience with the game improved drastically.

XDefiant Gameplay

In the alpha test, a solid foundation for what it could be was set, but lots of improvement was still needed. In the past beta test, it showed that they could be on the verge of a successful title with some changes still needed, but less than the previous test.

It’s not a COD killer by any means. That expectation is unrealistic and would be for any new franchise no matter what team was developing the game. XDefiant can be a success, its free-to-play model, fast-paced gameplay, map offerings, and content on day one of release can set it up to be a breath of fresh air in the FPS space.

If you didn’t get a chance to play the beta, keep an eye out for the next time there is an opportunity.

My friends and I have shared many laughs, competitive matches, and genuine excitement with this title already. I look forward to where they can take it with more feedback from the community, passion, time, and an open mind.

It’s not a COD killer by any means but a good change of pace and feels like a tribute to the roots that made Call Of Duty the monster of a franchise it is today. Show us something Ubisoft!
