So after having a PlayStation 5 for three years I finally played Astros Playroom… Now maybe that is not crazy to you but after playing it I can’t believe I never played it nor knew what it was about. It has me very excited for the upcoming release of Astro Bot on September 6th.
Up until this point in this generation of consoles the game that has felt the most “next gen” to me has been Returnal. Returnal gave a great glimpse of how taking advantage of the features of the Dual Sense controller can enhance the experience of the game. After playing Astros Playroom I really believe that Astro Bot could be an even bigger step in the direction of that sought after “next gen” feel.
Everybody’s take on this can be different. For me, next gen doesn’t necessarily have to be the latest and greatest in graphics (though very valid if it is for you). It doesn’t have to be the redefining or revolution of a gaming genre. It just has to be an experience as a whole, I feel as though I could not have had, if it was not for this generation of gaming.
The capabilities that are on display in Astros Playroom can provide that feeling and experience if built upon in Astro Bot. I had not experienced all of the features that the Dual Sense and PS5 had to offer until playing it. In such a short experience it really showcases a lot of what has been left on the table when it comes to some features that can be available to us in these games.
I’m not saying developers should sacrifice their artistic vision to force different or new features into a game or experience. However, I don’t think we’ve had an idea or vision inspired by the capabilities that are possible in this generation of gaming.
Not just with PlayStation but as a whole. That is why I am excited for Astro Bot. I am hopeful that this game can maybe provide a spark or inspire someone else to use the capabilities of the tech that we have at this point, to push gaming even further. It’s not a knock on gaming right now. Not by a long shot. We have been eating good and it’s crazy to think that we could be eating even better. I want to see it and I know you all do as well.
